Should I Use Sanded or Non-Sanded Grout?

The type of grout you need depends on the tile material and the width of the grout joints.

Use Sanded Grout When:

  • Grout joints are larger than 1/8"
  • Installing products such as:
    • Pebble mosaics
    • Irregular mosaics
    • Many porcelain tiles
    • Other installations with wider grout joints

Sanded grout provides additional strength and helps prevent cracking in wider joints.

Use Non-Sanded Grout When:

  • Installing tiles that can be scratched by abrasive materials, such as:
    • Glass mosaics
    • Metal mosaics
    • Aluminum mosaics
    • Polished surfaces
  • Grout joints are 1/8" or smaller

Non-sanded grout is smoother and less likely to damage delicate tile surfaces.

Consider Epoxy Grout When:

  • Grout joints exceed 1/8"
  • The installation will be exposed to significant moisture, chemicals, or heavy use
  • Additional stain resistance and durability are desired
